A Greener Life

A Greener Life by Clarissa Dickson Wright and Johnny Scott

I bought this book several years ago and still love it.  It was a useful go-to even when I still lived in town.  It's filled with useful information for anyone growing fruit and veges, keeping livestock or trying to live a greener life.

Mixed in with the wise and often funny advice are recipes for everything from fruit leathers to jugged hare to dry-cured bacon to vinegars.  There is also a section that teaches the beginner how to spin, knit, felt, crochet and many more useful craft ideas.

I can't recommend this book strongly enough.  I think it's a must have for anyone in any situation.

My favourite quote from this book:

What does it mean 'a greener life'?  Well, let's be brutal.  It doesn't mean meditating in a centrally heated room on a macrame mat in front of an Amerindian dreamcatcher and home-made beeswax candle surrounded by ugly spider plants, then rushing off in a gas-guzzling 4-wheel drive to collect the children from school and feeding them a supermarket ready meal from the microwave.

If you have faith, living a greener life demands a certain amount of self-sacrifice.  You don't save the planet with notions and lip service.  Like every adventure it requires a degree of suffering and getting your hands dirty.
